Cookies, Cakes, and More…

Shhh! Want to know a secret about party cakes??? March 27, 2009

I LOVE to do children’s birthday cakes!  I have so much fun imagining how excited the child will be when they see their special birthday cake.  I love the bright colors and fun designs that are incorporated into children’s cakes.   I am always honored to be asked to participate in a couples’ wedding, but childrens’ birthdays hold a special place in my heart!

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of making a cake for Ellie who turned 3.  Ellie was having a pizza party and wanted a pink cake.  Her mom asked if I could make anything out of that…Sure! I said.  Here is what I came up with for little Ellie…a Pretty in Pink Pizza Party.

The cake is a delicious dark chocolate cake covered in ruffled buttercream and a fondant tablecloth.  Each of the little plates and pieces of pizza were handmade by yours truly.  The mozzarella pieces were individually cut and applied with tweezers just so.

The birthday cake was dusted with a shimmery pink edible color and painted with a edible gold.  Everything you see on this cake is edible, although the pieces may get a little hard during the drying process.  If you choose not to eat the molded pieces you can keep them for a very long time….

I also made a cute soccer cake for McKenzie….the soccer ball on top is covered with marshmallow fondant and the grass is buttercream.  This soccer ball can be made into an complete 3D soccer ball that would serve aproximately 10 children.  Inside McKenzie asked for a moist butter cake, our most popular flavor.

An afternoon baby shower was the perfect scene for this stacked box cake.   The cake is our moist butter cake and they are filled with freshly made seedless raspberry buttercream.  The cakes are covered with buttercream and topped with fondant lids and bow.  The baby booties are made from gumpaste.

Bridal Show…… March 9, 2009

We recently participated our first show in Raleigh.  The Embassy Suites-Crabtree hosted a lovely show on a chilly Sunday afternoon.  We were happy to escape to the tropical theme of the show.  A lucky couple won a trip to a fabulous beach somewhere!

Here is a picture of our booth.  We offered three different cake styles along with matching favors.

We were offering 2 samples that day; Butter cake with chocolate mousse and Butter cake with a yummy lemon curd.  A lot of people shied away from the lemon curd…I guess it sounds a bit strange.  But I have to tell you…a freshly made curd (lemon, lime, passion fruit) is absolutely to DIE for!!  Tangy and sweet and oh so creamy!

We also met some more of Raleigh’s fabulous wedding classy-jeweled-cake-flowers-english-gardenvendors! Diamond Entertainment will get you and your loved ones to your wedding and reception in style!  Vivienne Carosso has excellent jewelry from Cookie Lee that would be perfect as bridesmaid gifts or your wedding day ensemble.  We are excited to visit Cute Buttons in Cary for adorable paper products and invitations.  And we were fortunate to meet the owners of The English Garden florist.  They were kind enough to allow us to take this photo of our cake next to their Stunning floral display.

You can catch us at our next bridal show on April 19th and the Southern Bridal Show & Expo at the NC Fairgrounds.  This show is hosted by Forever Bridal and I have heard that they host wonderful shows.  We will have more samples and new cakes for you to see.

Is there life beyond vanilla cake? January 7, 2009

So I know you are saying…”Julia, I have read over your extensive list of flavors (found here) and I am more confused now that ever”!  Don’t worry, you can have them all…. uhm well no, I guess that won’t work.  Okay since you asked so desperately, I will try to narrow it down to my top 5, uhm 10, er 11 favorites.  Cake is really a mix and match type deal… be creative, explore a little: it’s fun.

A word of advice, if I may, while you may absolutely LOVE chocolate cake with lemon curd…chances are the majority of your guests will not.  So consider choosing more than one flavor combination for your cake.  A minimal charge of $15 is added for each additional flavor combination, but this way you get your cake and your guests will eat it too!

Drum Roll please……Our most popular cake is…

Butter cake with Vanilla American Buttercream….

I believe the popularity of this cake stems from the fact that this cake reminds people of why they love cake.  This is a velvety moist cake with a rich creamy buttercream that tastes like home.  This cake is popular with both the wedding and birthday crowds.

Our most popular grown-up type cake (especially for Groom’s cakes) is:

Chocolate Heaven: A rich dark chocolate cake filled with dark chocolate ganache and raspberry filling, topped with the most fabulous dark chocolate ganache buttercream.

First things first Julia, where are You?? January 6, 2009

We operate our bakery out of our licensed and insured home kitchen in Raleigh, NC.  You can rest assured that your bakery items come from a pet-free, smoke-free environment.   We are inspected by the NC Dept of Agriculture before we accept orders and randomly at their discretion.  Some venues require proof of inspection and proof of insurance at time of delivery, please let us know if this is the case for your venue.

We are physically located in Wake Forest (specific address provided when making appointments) but we serve Raleigh and surrounding areas.  If you are not sure of our delivery coverage area, just ask.  We are very flexible and try to be as accomodating as possible.  Most often, the only limiting factor on our delivery area are previously scheduled deliveries.
